"I´ll never stop missing Mrs Balls´chutney or peppermint crisp chocolates, but I can get just as excited about Italian cuisine or films (…) or the thought of my mother-in-law´s home-made pretzels and Obazta wating for me when we travel to Bavaria".
South African journalist Anli Serfontein grew up in Johannesburg and has lived in Germany for more than 10 years. Last year she released her first book “From Rock to Kraut”. Therein she reflects her observations – in a subjective, but humorous and entertaining manner – and writes about her experiences in the rather small and tranquil city of Trier. By now a second edition of the book has been released for the German market, with the title “Basteln, Wandern und Putzen” (“Crafting, Hiking and Cleaning”) and has been selected by Vito von Eichborn as book of the month for the Edition BoD (Books on Demand) in August 2008.
Various emigrants - South Africans living in Germany and Germans living in South Africa - discuss cross-cultural images and stereotypes, the phenomenon of culture shock and different self-perceptions and those of the other.
